Login and authentication case study

Login With Google & Apple
One login, web and iPhone

One-tap sign-in with Google and Apple, plus email magic links, working the same on the website and the iPhone app. It handles the cases most apps get wrong, like Apple users who hide or never share their email.

One login, web and iPhone

Google, Apple and email-link sign-in all lead to the same account on the web and in the native iOS app. Emails to Apple's hidden addresses are delivered, and invites to people without an account turn into team members as soon as they sign up.

/ The challenge

Where the bottleneck actually was

Every extra step at sign-up loses people. Coaches wanted to sign in with the account they already have, on the laptop and on the phone, and land in the same place. Apple adds its own rules: an iPhone app that offers Google sign-in must also offer Sign in with Apple, and Apple lets people hide their real email behind a private address.

Every extra sign-up step loses people.
Apple requires Sign in with Apple when an app offers Google sign-in.
Apple users can hide their email, and mail to those hidden addresses bounces unless set up correctly.
One account had to work the same way on the website and inside a native app.
/ What we built

A system built around the real workflow

We built one login system shared by the website and the iPhone app. People can sign in with Google, with Apple, or with a one-time email link, and end up in the same account with the same boards. We registered the sending address with Apple so mail to hidden "private relay" addresses is delivered, and we handle the rare Apple account that shares no email at all. Team invites work too: you can invite an email that has no account yet, and the moment that person signs up, they join the team.

/ Questions

Common questions

Do I need Sign in with Apple? +

If your iPhone app offers sign-in with Google or another social account, Apple's rules require Sign in with Apple as well.

What is an Apple private relay email? +

Apple lets users hide their real address behind a forwarding one. Mail to it only arrives if your sending address is registered with Apple, which we set up.
